This elegant mahogany desk chair is characteristic for the Louis XVI period. It has a raised curved back support that stands on four baluster-shaped columns resting on the seat rail, and ends in finely carved scroll decorations. It is upholstered with fine leather and stands on four tapering baluster-shaped legs, delicately moulded at the shoulders and the feet.
The absence of protruding armrests enhances the chair’s functionality, while offering comfort thanks to its wide seat. This unique model with its pure and simplified forms, as well as its mahogany frame, already foresees a new style which was to emerge during the Consulate and the Empire.

At the beginning, this type of seats were created to fill the military troops need for logistic effectiveness early in the 19th century, starting with Napoleon himself, extremely protective of his campaign furniture. He wrote in 1812 :
"My tent needs to fit in a single truck. This reflects the art of the Garde-Meuble (furniture storage). Spend twice as much if necessary but build a practical, strong and light furniture" . To fulfill the expectations of the Emperor, the administration of the Garde Meuble impérial commissioned tents, beds, armchairs, chairs, tools and tables to be easily folded, put away and moved. Since function preceded form, the latter was reduced to its single most expression, as featured in our armchair.

Each paterae crowns a tapering spiral fluted leg ending at the bottom in a large flat band and a small sphere. The back rest, entirely upholstered, is low and indented to facilitate hair care. The two padded armrests ending in scrolls join the seat rail through fluted scrolled s-shaped arm supports attached to the front legs paterae with a triglyph.

Bought in Paris at the beginning of the Consulate by count Nicolas-Antoine-Xavier de Castella de Berlens, future general of the Empire, to furnish his Parisian hotel particulier; transferred to his chateau de Wallenried in Switzerland; inherited by the Castella family in Wallenried; private European collection.

This set of twelve mahogany chairs and armchairs is characteristic of the end of the Directoire (1795-1799) and the beginning of the Consulate period (1799-1804). The tapering baluster shaped front legs topped with a gadrooned crown are ending in carved paws. The back legs are splayed. Each foot is surmounted with a stylized rosette within a square inset.

Each armchair features a straight-lined seat rail arched on the front, resting on two slightly tapering square section front legs, and two saber back legs flaring outwards in the Etruscan manner. The sides of the back rest are shaped as a console ending in a scroll at the top. Jacob-Desmalter thus enhanced our armchairs with important female sphinxes, which can also be admired in a set of six carved giltwood armchairs delivered for the Palais des Tuileries in 1808, now conserved at the château de Versailles
