Bronze groupe, after the antique the Farnese bull
Inspired by Greek mythology, the Farnese bull represents the tragic episode of Dirce’s death. Dirce, married to Lycos, was aunt to the nymph Antiope whom Zeus seduced. Following this event, Antiope fled in shame but was brought back and imprisoned by Lycos. On her way, she gave birth to two sons Amphion and Zethos. Her aunt was devoured by hatred and treated her cruelly. She managed however to escape in order to find her two sons, who took revenge by killing Lycos and Dirce. They attached the latter by her hair to the corns of a bull; Dirce was then thrown off of a cliff in the Aegean Sea.
