Frans Hals by Jean-Joseph Carries
This bust of patinated plaster represents the famous Dutch painter Frans Hals (1580/83-1660). It comes from the collection of Yves Plantin, founder of the Galerie du Luxembourg in 1967, specialized in Hector Guimard works and which significantly contributed to his rediscovery. Dating back to the 1884-1885 years, this work is a brilliant testimony of a period of great sculptural activity for Jean Carriès. From this time is also the bust of Velasquez, a series of portraits said historicizing, revealing the need for the artist to anchor his sculpture in a historical and undeniable pictorial directory.
