Pair of chairs by René Cresson
The present chairs attest the “symmetrical rococo” style introduced by the cabinetmakers in the 1750s. This phase is well characterized by the present pieces in which symmetry is brought to the rococo while retaining its essential vocabulary. Here the deeply carved ornaments of outstanding quality are placed symmetrically. In accord with this style, these chairs exhibit a certain grandeur and opulence in its substantial design and rich carving.
