This glazed stoneware sculpture depicts a sleeping infant. The subject and the technique are characteristic of the work of Jean Carriès. Indeed the theme of childhood is recurrend in his career, with many sculptures and his way of working, largely focused on the surface, as evidenced by his work of the was in the first part of his career.
The artist’s life also explains the link with childhood : he tragically lost his parents at the age of 6 and he retained his whole life a childhish behavior. The « babies » subject, with the series of the « désolés » or historicisants busts, is a director line of his work.
