View of a Swiss lake by Claude-Louis Chatelet
Our large-scale painting is signed, dated 1780 and located. Unfortunately, the location is difficult to read. This painting is ot be compared to the Swiss landscapes and lakes, of which Claude-Louis Chatelet will illustrate by contributing with other artists to the monumental work published by the influential fermier général Jean Benjamin de Laborde: Les Tableaux topographiques de la Suisse, commented by the Baron of Zurlauben, circa 1776. The engravings which compose it were published in three volumes between 1782 and 1788.
Considering the format of this painting, it can only correspond to an important commission, probably for a large decor. Difficult to say if this paining was part of a set since Chatelet sometimes realized a composition for itself. Nevertheless, the quality of execution is reminiscent of the virtuosity of the landscapes of Hubert Robert which had a significant influence on him.
