Epoque: Berlin, circa 1800

Material: Ormolu, cut crystal, blue colored crystal.

Dimensions: H. 55 in. (140 cm); diam. 32 ½ in (84 cm)

Description:

The structure of this chandelier is divided into two parts linked with four chains alternating rings and larger crystal disks circled with bronze. The lower flaring ‘corbel’ with a pine finial is centered with a blue colored crystal bowl and a rail issuing eight scrolled arms terminating in a stem bordered with crystals supporting drip pans and nozzles. It is surrounded with a pierced gallery of stylized palmettes supporting four ormolu palms linked with ormolu bridges in the form of a ‘canopy’. The circular drip pans and nozzles are chased with contrasting bands against a mate background.

The upper tier displays in its lower part a narrow ormolu crown enclosing a blue colored crystal bowl supported by a cross-shaped structure holding three pendants and a white cut-crystal faceted sphere. A suspension stem holds the chandelier displaying two-thirds of the way up an umbrella-shaped composition crowned with a disk issuing six small ormolu arms. The entire composition is enriched with prismatic crystals each hanging from a faceted small cut-crystal oval.
