Little is known about the life of Girolamo Troppa, even though art historians have conducted research on the painter for the last fifty years. An annotated catalogue of his work has never been written, but his oeuvre is estimated at a mere ninety paintings. Our canvas constitutes an important addition to this number and its attribution has been confirmed by the expert of Troppa, Mr Erich Schleier. Girolamo Troppa, who was born in Central Italy in the province of Latium, was strongly influenced by Pier Francesco Mola (1612-1666) and Giaquinto Brandi (1621-1691) in the 1660’s (cf. figs. 1 and 2). During the next decade, the work of Carlo Maratta (1625-1713) and Giovan Battista Gaulli, called Baciccio (1639-1709) inspired him. In 1672 the painter worked under the auspices of Gaulli at the decoration of the Santa Marta al Collegio Romano, founded in Rome by the Jesuit order in 1551. He created numerous paintings and frescos for the peninsula’s churches, mostly located in Rome and its surrounding area. In 1685, he established himself permanently in the capital of the Papal States, where he died in 1715. Our Prodigal Son is painted in a style that is similar to Giovanni Lanfranco (1582-1647), Pier Francesco Mola (1612-1666) and Giaquinto Brandi (1621-1691). Each one of these artists resided in Rome during the 1660’s; we therefore conclude that Troppa realized the Endymion rather early in his career. The Prodigal Son is one of the parables of the New Testament and appears in the Gospel According to Luke (15:11-32). It’s the story of a son taking leave of his father when he inherits his family’s fortune. He spends all the money on worldly pleasures and ends up alone, working for a harsh master. Finally he decides to find his father and he reconciles with him. Upon his arrival home, his father decides to organize a reception in order to celebrate his son’s homecoming, provoking the incomprehension of the second son, who always obeyed his father. The text of the Bible, emphasizing the father's final act of forgiveness, states: « we have to feast and rejoice, because your brother who was dead is now alive, he was lost and now he is found ». The clear difference in color and lighting, especially visible on the muscles, as well as the movement of the body, are typical for the Baroque manner. The artist chose to represent the young shepherd when Selene notices him, just before she sinks him in a deep sleep. The goddess’ presence is suggested in an immaterial manner, notably by the changing light intensity. The rays of the moon play upon on different body parts, upon the dark heaven and the landscape, casting over the whole surface a dreamlike and mystical light. Our painting was made with great technical skill and remained in a perfect condition; it is one of the most beautiful examples of Troppa’s art. Greatly influenced by painters of the beginning of the 17th century, he skillfully combined sensuality and Baroque theatricality.
