Description:

These gueridon tables were created in England circa 1807 after a drawing titled “Flat cup of rosso antico placed on a tripod of bronze”, by celebrated ornamentist Thomas Hope (1769-1831), whose name remains linked to the distinctively English, Greek Revival movement. The drawing, published that same year in his notorious book titled Household Furniture (pl. XI, ill. 5), features the gueridon tables on a projecting wooden pedestal, with escutcheons bronze ornaments and eagles with a ribonned laurel swag.

The most innovative and experimental part of Hope’s work was undoubtedly his bronze models. He relied on the talent of French immigrant Alexis Decaix in London to cast them with a quality of workmanship comparable to those built in Paris.
