Minerva, entourage of Joseph Nollekens
Description:
Dressed in a long robe and a cloak, armed with a spear and a shield, protected by a helmet and a breastplate, this Minerva is as much a representation of wisdom as of armed virtues. Her fringed dress contrasts with the breastplate covered by scales and a gorgon, the shield adorned with a Medusa head is highlighted by a frieze, the hair is unfolded in loops around her nape, the Greek helmet is magnified by an owl and spectacular feathers. Highly refined, this terracotta is characteristic of European 18th century, the « Lumières » period.
