Description:

Our painting was made for the exhibition of 1781 where the artist sent two large oval paintings realized for the chapel Sainte-Trinité in Fontainebleau and several small paintings.

This painting is described in the Salon Book of 1781, n°121 (« In the background of the painting, we see a burning Town, a distraught Trade, and on the front a broke, Plow, and the attributes of the abandoned arts, 6 feet high by 5 wide »).
